Rent-A-Dog Successful Again

Kappa Sigma again partnered with the Western PA Humane Society to hold another successful Rent-A-Dog event on CMU's campus. Today's event, held at The Fence in the center of campus, raised hundreds of dollars for shelters in PA. Kappa Sigma holds the Rent-A-Dog events at least once per semester, allowing students to play with puppies that would otherwise remain at the shelter via donations to the humane society.

Look for us to be back on campus with the dogs again soon!

Think you'd like to be a part of a house that holds events like this? Rush Kappa Sigma and become a better man!

Delta-Alpha Ranked Top 25 Nationally for Academics

In national rankings released today the Delta-Alpha chapter's academic success over the past year was reflected in a Top 25 ranking amongst all Kappa Sigma chapters. The chapter's 3.21 GPA ranked 19th nationally. The chapter looks forward to continuing to foster academic excellence in its brothers and pledges as we begin the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kappa Sig's Success Recognized at CMU Greek Awards

Kappa Sigma was recognized for the strength of its brotherhood and programming today at the annual Carnegie Mellon Greek Awards. Each year the university awards chapters in various categories. This year the Delta-Alpha chapter was recognized with 3 awards:

  • Chapter of Distinction
  • Outstanding Risk Management Program
  • Outstanding Recruitment Program

Two Kappa Sig brothers were also recognized - senior brother Derek Lee was presented with the "Outstanding Community Service for an Individual" award, recognizing the single individual in the entire CMU Greek community who has most distinguished himself by his service efforts. Brother Tim Bach was awarded with the "Distinguished Greek" award for his leadership in the house and Greek community.

Kappa Sigma Wins Chairman's Choice!

Kappa Sigma's buggy team and their 2011 buggy, Apache, were awarded this weekend with the Chairman's Choice award as an outstanding team this season. Over the course of the year, Kappa Sigma has reestablished itself as a competitor on raceday, building a new buggy and training an entirely new team of pushers and mechanics. Apache raced as a Men's A buggy and placed 18th out of 31 entries on Raceday this year, a testament to the strength of the revived program.

Kap Sig looks forward to continuing to compete even harder in the 2012 season starting next Fall! Images from Raceday and the team are below, and more information and pictures can be found on the BAA website.

Brother Nochenson Inducted into Order of Omega

This week Kappa Sigma brother Alan Nochenson was inducted into the Order of Omega - the Greek honor society. The Order recognizes active Greeks who have shown excellence in both scholarship and leadership within their house and/or the Greek community and induction is a high honor. Alan's induction means that there are now three active Kappa Sig's in the Order.

Kappa Sigma's "Top Gun: The Musical" Takes 2nd Place!

Kappa Sigma's production of Top Gun: The Musical won 2nd place this weekend at the annual Greek Sing charity fundraiser and competition. The script, written and directed by senior brother Chris Bondoc, translated the classic Tom Cruise movie into a 10-minute musical with parts acted and sung entirely by Kappa Sigma brothers. Music for the show was adapted by brother Sean MacGahan and performed by a band composed entirely of brothers. The show was well received by both judges and the large audience.

CMU's Greek Sing is an annual event which raises tens of thousands of dollars for local and national charities. This year the beneficiary was The Children's Institute of Pittsburgh and almost $40,000 was raised by the Greek community through the event.

An audience-filmed copy of the show can be seen on YouTube here, and a high-quality version will be available from CMUTV in the future.

The brothers of Kappa Sigma spent this weekend on the shores of Lake Eerie at an annual brotherhood retreat lead by the Executive Committee. Brothers worked on team building exercises and set goals and plans for the upcoming semester and year. After the work was done, brothers also spent time shooting rifles, rock climbing, and snow tubing.

Apache Completes First Rolls

This morning, Kappa Sigma's new buggy Apache completed her first successful rolls around the course. Work continues on perfecting the buggy, but she is now successfully accumulating qualifying rolls for Raceday 2011. This weekend marks the last practice rolls of the Fall semester, allowing the team to continue to work and train over break and return for all Spring rolls.

A full rolls report and gallery is available on the Buggy Alumni Association's website.

Rent-A-Dog 2010 Raises Hundreds for Humane Society

Kappa Sigma's annual Rent-A-Dog event held this week was a huge success, raising hundreds of dollars in donations for the Pittsburgh Humane Society. The event, which is held in the center of campus at a Kappa Sigma-controlled Fence, allows students to "rent" a dog to play with for periods of 15 minutes in exchange for a donation to the Humane Society. That money allows the society to run the shelters that the dogs come from and to protect even more abandoned pets. This serves the dual purpose of allowing the dogs to get outside and run around, something they don't get enough of at the shelter.

This year, 4 dogs visited campus with Kappa Sigma, and we're looking forward to a bigger event than ever next year!
